The official requirement, plainly explained

What does USCIS require for a document in another language?

Under 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3), a document containing a foreign language submitted to USCIS must be accompanied by a full English translation. The translator must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

Read 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3) on eCFR

Which version of the birth certificate to request, country by country

Most returned files come down to the same mistake: translating a summary when the filing needs the full record. Request the right version before paying for the translation.

CountryWhat to requestWhere it goes wrongGuide
ColombiaRegistro civil de nacimiento, authenticated copy (copia auténtica)The baptism certificate (partida de bautismo) is a church document, not the civil record.Guide
CubaCertificación literal from the Registro del Estado CivilThe extract leaves out marginal notes; the certificación often carries a limited validity period.Guide
EcuadorElectronic certificate with verification code, or the copy of the book entryOlder entries are handwritten; the verification code must be transcribed exactly.Guide
El SalvadorPartida de nacimiento from the Registro del Estado Familiar, or the RNPN certification with QR codeIf a parent was added or changed, the original partida is canceled and may also be needed.Guide
GuatemalaCertificado de nacimiento issued by RENAP, front and backA certificate from the municipal registry is not the RENAP one.Guide
HondurasCopia de folio from the RNP birth book, with the registrar's seal and signatureThe certificación, hoja de vida and literal are not the copia de folio.Guide
MexicoCertified copy (national portal printout or state copy)The CURP may still show data from before a correction.Guide
PeruCertified copy of the RENIEC recordRecords still held by a municipality are handwritten and harder to read.Guide
Dominican RepublicSingle-format acta (since July 2025) or a pre-July 2025 inextensa with QR codeAn old extract is not enough for immigrant or K visas.Guide
VenezuelaCertified copy from the civil registry office that holds the bookIf the prefectura no longer exists, its name is the only way to trace the book.Guide

Before you send us the birth certificate

  • Send every page, front and back, including the apostille or legalization page if it has one.
  • A phone photo works if the whole page is in frame, in focus, and the edges are not cut off.
  • If there are handwritten notes in the margin, add a close-up photo of that area.
  • Tell us whether the birth was registered late or the record was corrected later. It is better to know before we start.

Valid for any USCIS form

The translation rule in 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3) is the same for every USCIS filing. The same certified translation of your birth certificate works for a family petition, an adjustment of status or a naturalization application.

Birth certificate translation questions

Does USCIS require an English translation of a birth certificate?

When a submitted document contains a language other than English, 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3) requires a full English translation with the translator’s certification of completeness, accuracy, and competence.

Does a USCIS translation need to be notarized?

The cited USCIS rule requires the translator’s certification; it does not state a general notarization requirement. A court, consulate, state agency, or another receiving organization may have different instructions, so confirm with that organization.

Do you translate stamps and annotations?

We translate the legible content of the document, including relevant stamps, notes, and annotations. Unreadable content is identified rather than guessed.

How long does it take?

Typical delivery is 1 to 2 business days for documents of 1 to 3 pages, after the price is confirmed and payment is received. Larger or complex documents receive a confirmed delivery date before payment.

How much does it cost to translate a birth certificate?

$29 for a one-page birth certificate. Certified translation is $29 for the first page and $25 for each additional page, up to 500 words per page. The final price is confirmed after document review and before payment.

Which version of my birth certificate should I translate?

The full version of the record, not the summary or extract. Each country calls it something different: acta inextensa in the Dominican Republic (single format since July 2025), certificación literal in Cuba, registro civil de nacimiento in Colombia. The table on this page lists each one.

Can I send a photo taken with my phone?

Yes, if the whole page is in frame, in focus and legible, with the edges intact. If the record has handwritten notes in the margin, add a close-up of that area.

Does the same translation work for the I-130, the I-485 and the N-400?

Yes. The translation requirement in 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3) applies to every USCIS filing, so one certified translation of your birth certificate can be used for any of them.
